Ocean Task Force Camp will be two weeks of ocean environmental themed activities that will challenge and inspire campers like never before. At Skyrock we believe in sustainability and protecting our precious oceans. The future depends on using STEAM problem-solving to help clean, care for, and repair our ocean environment. Join this summers Ocean Task Force to be part of the solution!

Build a water drone with an A.I. camera!

What we will do:

  • Explore water drone designs and 3D print the enclosure, fan, and trash collection arm

  • Create and app and program a phone into a remote control to communicate with the water drone

  • Hook up a camera to allow a live video stream from the water drone

  • Connect the servo and fan to allow the water drone to move

  • Build the trash collection arm and verify we can control it remotely

  • Attach the arm to the enclosure and electronics

  • Put the circuit inside the water drone enclosure
  • Program an AI using Machine Learning to recognize different trash and objects in water

  • Test the water drone out on a course and test the accuracy of the trash-detection AI

What we will learn:

By building a water drone:

  • How different water propulsion systems work and the physics behind them.
  • How power generation and enclosure design needs to be accounted for in relation to water-based systems.
  • Why is ocean trash a big problem and what are the major efforts to reduce it and clean it up.
  • How to edit 3D modelling designs and how the water drone frame design affects the performance of the drone.
  • Hot to utilize electronic power generation and how to power servos through a battery pack and Arduino.
  • How electronic communication protocols work and how they allow us to control the water drone.
  • How to troubleshoot robotic systems and how to bring a project through the last 20% of completion (the hardest part)

By building an A.I. camera:

  • Learn about the foundational concepts in machine learning, along with specifically how image and video object detection work.
  • How accuracy and precision relate to each major machine learning method - supervised vs unsupervised learning, classification, regression.
  • Why we need to consider the dangers of using AI - and how to avoid them.
  • Learn about modularization and how it can allow us to have a water drone with different plug-and-play components to it.
  • How to create and curate a dataset that can be utilized by machine learning.

Schedule:

Daily schedule:

Timetable: 5pm-7:30pm

Week 1: Water Drone

Day 1: Learn about how water drones work and how they move on water.

Day 2: Explore and choose water drone design, making personal edits to the 3D models.

Day 3: Learn about the electronics used to make the water drone move and sense the world around them.

Day 4: Put it all together – take the 3D prints and put the electronics inside them.

Day 5: Test, verify, calibrate and improve the Water drone.

Week 2: Add the AI camera!

Day 1: Learn about the latest machine learning and AI object detection through cameras.

Day 2: Put together a circuit with the camera attached and see how we can add the AI software to the camera.

Day 3: Install the camera circuit to the water drone and verify it is functional and everything is secure.

Day 4: Collect data for the machine learning model, allowing the rover to detect objects around it.

Day 5: Water drone will navigate a course, using the AI software to either collect trash or avoid humans and fish.

Our summer STEAM theme camps promise to be the most exciting learning experience available.

Which grade group should I choose—current or after summer?

Choose the grade group they will enter after summer.

How many students will be in a class?
